There are no companies, only people. Makes sense, right?
And knowing that there’s still an ongoing war for top talent, we thought we’d share some of the knowledge we’ve gathered relative to this important topic, hopeful that you’ll find some value for your own recruiting and hiring efforts.
First things first: The class of 2022 holds a ton of leverage in this sizzling hot hiring market. They’re in demand, they know it, and they have the expectations to match.
This means they have choices, however some of what they actually desire – their mindset when making employer choices – may surprise you.
Here’s a top five to consider. 2022 grads wish list:
🤩 “Coming into an office”
– After spending two years of education under pandemic conditions, grads are hungry for in-person work, including face-to-face personal coaching and training. Turns out that humans actually need one another beyond “virtual.”
🤩 “Salary”
– OK, no surprise here, however understand why the acute focus on money – maybe more so than previous generations. This group lived through The Great Recession, a 100-year pandemic, and inflation at a 40-year high. They are risk averse, seeking security. If you go cheap, you’ll lose. The competition is fierce. Time to pony up.
🤩 “Clear, meaningful work”
– What’s the specific assignment? Who will be my boss? What are the cool projects? Because grads can afford to be choosey, they want to know exactly how their expertise will be used; what the responsibilities are. The last thing they desire is “limitations.”
🤩 “Culture”
– More and more, this generation wants to know what their employer stands for – the ‘higher calling’ – especially the social issues they believe in. Morals and values are critically important to many. Some will go as far to reach out to former company employees to get a true pulse on the work environment.
🤩 “Flexibility”
– Again, working 100% remote is not the goal of most grads, and there are many reasons for this. Colleague interaction is very important to them, as is the freedom to address personal issues as they arise; the employer empathetic and able to adapt work loads and deadlines accordingly. Command and control management is the antithesis of what they will tolerate.
There’s a reason why employers may be getting ghosted, or grads reneging on offers. Follow our advice and your odds should improve. Just remember that top candidates have options, therefore be sure you’re positioned as an “employer of choice.”
