New UPS parcel surcharges to take effect on January 16th. A brief summary of the new charges:

– $0.30 surcharge on all domestic ground residential deliveries, and on parcels moving via its SurePost program with the U.S. Postal Service
– $3.50 per piece surcharge on shipments that require so-called additional handling
– $40 per package surcharge on packages that exceed 96 inches in length or 130 inches in combined length and girth.

While the costs to operate have certainly gone up, there is no doubt carriers can be choosier with the packages and freight they transport these days.
